Headed down to Chattanooga to explore the battlefields, we got caught in a tremendous rain storm, and finally pulled over for a late breakfast in Knoxville. Mimi's Cafe is one of our favorite FAMILY FRIENDLY restaurants of all times! Located all over the US, they are a great place to take the kids while you are out exploring living history sites!

The rest of America agrees. Parent's Magazine just ranked MIMIS CAFE 3rd BEST FAMILY RESTAURANT CHAIN IN THE NATION We ate at Mimi's Cafe a few times a month when we lived in CA and we have simply never had a bad meal at a Mimi's anywhere in the US!

When we pulled off I-40 (after being re-routed around I-640 because a chunk of I-40 is closed forever - 16 months - for repairs) I was thrilled to pull up and see the cheery, familiar facade of Mimi's! A respite in the storm!

The Knoxville Mimi's Cafe did not disappoint! They told us it would be a 20 minute wait, but were ready to seat us within 5 minutes. Shawn, our server, was quick and prompt and did a great job, despite a super busy weekend afternoon crowd, escaping the rain!

The menu has changed a bit, using 100% trans fat free cooking oil. Mimi's has introduced a new "Small Bites" menu (I love to see this trend sweeping the nation - plates are TOO big and it is just too tempting not to finish your plate when you are traveling!). They make their yummy desserts and soups from scratch each day, along with their quiche and pot pies.Pain Perdu at Mimi's Cafe

I ordered the Pain Perdu Breakfast, a "Best of Mimi's" selection, which is petite French toast stuffed with cream cheese, served with real maple syrup, a treat that is just out of this world! It comes with two eggs (ordered over-medium, for some strange reason they were watering and undercooked). As country as it may sound, my Dad would always cut his eggs up and then swirl his hashbrowns through them. To this day, there is nothing better than fried eggs with hot potatoes! The red skin potatoes were really hot and crisp and yummy! Topped with an order of crisp bacon, this meal was excellent if you knock out the underfried waterlogged eggs! A glass of freshly squeezed orange juice that tasted like California in a glass started the meal. With breakfast at Mimi's, I love to have the Mimi's Caffe Latte, with a sprinkle of chocolate powder on top! Delicious, the perfect breakfast treat!

Mimi's Cafe Three Berry Stuffed French Toast Breakfast Emily had the Three Berry Stuffed French Toast Breakfast, which was a flavor explosion of French toast, stuffed with cream cheese and orange marmalade, with cascading torrents of fresh berries! Oh, it was wonderful, fresh, plump blueberries, strawberries and raspberry puree (not that phony tasting berry mush so popular for breakfast toppings and ice cream). Served with two eggs (her eggs were pretty slobbery on the alleged "over medium" it was simply not over medium day at Mimi's!) Her bacon was crisp and delicious and a real treat, along with the same shimmery CA fresh squeezed OJ!

Shawn was nice enough to bring us a basket of fresh bread. It is amazing how much you miss your favorite restaurants when you move cross country! We thoroughly enjoyed the homemade Carrot Raisin Bread, it was as moist and delicious as ever! The French bread was crisp and warm and so fresh.

All in all, our breakfast at Mimi's was great. Had the eggs been cooked a little better, it would have been perfect, hitting all of those tastes, flavors and textures we miss so much!

A special thanks to Will, the Assistant Manager, for hosting our review!
